The Central Bank of Kenya was established in 1966 through an Act of Parliament - the Central Bank of Kenya Act of 1966. The establishment of the Bank was a direct result of the desire among the three East African states to have independent monetary and financial policies. The Central Bank of Kenya Act of 1966 set out objectives and functions and gave the Central Bank limited autonomy. Since the amendment of the Central Bank of Kenya Act in April 1997, the Central Bank operations have been restructured to conform with ongoing economic reforms. Licensing of Metropol Credit Reference Bureau 11 April 2011 The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) has granted a licence to Metropol CRB to offer banking sector credit information sharing services in Kenya. Metropol Credit Reference Bureau Ltd, which is a wholly-owned Kenyan company, is the second licensed credit reference bureau in Kenya after CRB Africa Ltd which was licensed in February 2010.. Download Press Release Hongkong Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) Limited to open a Representative Office in Kenya 07 April 2011 The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) has granted authority to the Hongkong Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) Limited to open a Representative Office in Kenya. The authority was granted pursuant to section 43 of the Banking Act. Download Press Release The launch of the Small and Micro Enterprises Programme Deposit Taking Microfinance Limited (SMEP DTM Ltd) 05 April 2011 The Governor launched the Small and Micro Enterprises Programme Deposit Taking Microfinance Limited (SMEP DTM Ltd). SMEP DTM Ltd has achieved a milestone by being the fourth deposit taking microfinance institution to be licensed by the Central Bank of Kenya under the Microfinance Act. It is important to note that the Central Bank has to date licensed five deposit taking microfinance institutions; approved 26 business names; and is processing six applications for licence which are at various stages of review. Download Governor's Remarks Cheque Truncation System : Yet another milestone in the modernization of Kenya's Payments System 04 April 2011 The Central Bank of Kenya in conjunction with the Kenya Bankers Association (KBA) is pleased to announce the implementation of the Cheque Truncation System (CTS) in the Automated Clearing House. Cheque truncation refers to a process in which physical cheques presented for payment in a bank by individuals or corporate bodies are converted into electronic form and the image transmitted electronically to the Clearing House for processing and eventual payment by the paying bank (i.e. the drawer’s bank). Download Press Release Central Bank Rate (CBR) increased to 6% 22 March 2011 The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) met on 22nd March 2011 and decided to tighten the monetary policy stance by raising the CBR to 6 percent. The Committee’s decision to raise the CBR reflects a change in the monetary policy stance and sends the signal that temporary shocks such as exchange rate volatility and seasonal food shortages should not be allowed a persistence that will be built into the pricing structures.
