Automation of patient information in Government hospitals
Friday, 29 April 2011 16:28

A national automation programme incorporating information of patients visiting the country’s Government hospitals has been launched.
The programme implemented by the ICT Agency of Sri Lanka (ICTA) it was officially launched at the Karawanella Base Hospital recently. ICTA says that according to this programme, relevant information with regard to all procedures and stages of Government hospital health care from registration of a patient on arrival till departure will be automated.
ICTA CEO Reshan Dewapura says that as a result of this automation programme the public will be able to obtain a health service that is more efficient and beneficial through the Gocernment hospitals. While a number is issued to each patient on arrival and registration, information pertinent to all services provided to him her will be computerised and shown under the said number. This will greatly facilitate treatment of the patient on his subsequent visit(s) to the hospital in a manner that is more comfortable to the patient and easier for the hospital staff for providing optimum service, Dewapura said.

Concerted strategies needed to fight cybercrimes: Attorney General lauds Sri Lankan IT laws
Thursday, 28 April 2011 12:13

The Attorney General said so delivering his keynote address as Chief Guest at the international workshop on “Co-operation against Cybercrime in South Asia”, held in Colombo recently.
The event was hosted jointly by Council of Europe and the ICT Agency of Sri Lanka (ICTA) in association with the Ministry of Justice. The participants consisting of Government and law enforcement representatives from South Asian countries - Bangladesh, India, Maldives, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, came together to enhance their capacity for cooperating against cybercrime. The workshop provided an ideal opportunity to assess cybercrime and IT related legislation of the countries concerned.
At the outset the Attorney General commended ICTA for its “contributions towards recent IT related legislation, particularly, the Electronic Transactions Act No. 19 of 2006 and the Computer Crimes Act No. 24 of 2007. Whilst the Electronic Transactions Act provides an excellent framework legalising e-commerce, e-business and e-governance with a unique evidence regime for the admissibility of electronic documents in courts, the Computer Crimes Act provides the safeguards against cybercrime. Both these legislations and consequential policy changes make Sri Lanka e-ready to march towards e-governance”.
The keynote address of President’s Counsel Mohan Pieris took the participants through a legal journey traversing many countries, including the Philippines, Russia, USA, UK as well as Hungary, which has now become famous for the Budapest Cybercrime Convention adopted in 2001.

ICTA, a source of strength to the Ministry of Justice: Suhada Gamlath
Tuesday, 12 April 2011 10:08

Lead story of Sunday Island of April 10
Justice Ministry Secretary Suhada Gamlath says that his Ministry has received much strength from the ICT Agency of Sri Lanka (ICTA).
The Secretary said so during his keynote address as the guest of honour at the inauguration of the two-day international workshop on cooperation against cybercrime in South Asia jointly hosted by the Council of Europe and ICTA.
Speaking further during the keynote address on the occasion of the launch of the workshop held at Hilton Colombo Residence recently Secretary Justice commended the contribution made by the staff of ICTA, in particular its Director Legal Advisor Jayantha Fernando towards the formulation of the Computer Crime Act, No. 24 of 2007. Pointing out the need for further endeavours the secretary said: “Since the Act was certified by the Speaker on 9th July, 2007, there are 194 investigations ongoing under this Act. However no indictments have been filed to date. But this is not unusual.
This is the experience in many countries. Hence the need of further collective effort at domestic, regional and international level to give teeth to this piece of legislation especially through further work on electronic evidence as well as training for judges and prosecutors”, the Secretary pointed out.
In his welcoming address ICTA Chairman Professor P. W. Epasinghe said: “For countries of South Asia – as for societies in other regions of the world — information and communication technologies provide unprecedented opportunities for social and economic development. However, as societies rely on ICT, at the same time they become vulnerable to risks such as cybercrime. Cooperation at all levels — interagency, public-private, international — is a crucial element of the response.
